After reviewing some of the comments pertaining to setting up the equipment data base, I am a bit confused by some of the answers in the threads. The Question is this. Will the 2012 software work with a GPS collector or not? We would like to utilize what I call the autodraw function of the survey database, as this will save an ungodly amount of time. Yet I can not find instructions on setting it up using a GPS collector. We are currently using the 'Ranger X', which I beleive is made by TopCon.Would someone at Autodesk email me instructions on how to set this up if the GPS units can be used. I have not located any instructions in the help files. My email address is.
In the subject put att: Dave. Trimble Link does something very funky, which actually works in many situations.
It basically treats the GPS vector from the base station as a total-station shot, allowing it to work with C3D's FBK system. A very dysfunctional approach, in my opinion, but it CAN work.Personally, I think most of C3D's Survey functionality is barely-useable, and have been very vocal in telling Autodesk about that.
But they still don't seem to understand the importance of Survey, and concentrate on their Engineering clients. Some of the new stuff is neat, but it leaves most of us frustrated whenever we have to deal with Survey. Little changes from one yearly release to another, so Autodeak can only address so much before they have to launch their 'latest and greatest(?)'. To answer your question about working with GPS datacollector directly, no it will not. The functionality Sinc talks about is for Trimble collectors only and in my opinion, not worth it when compared to importing the data into Trimble Geomatics Office. If you currently use Topcon's software to process RTK or static, then keep using it.

Import your GPS data into their software, process, adjust, etc. And then export to an ascii file. You can then import the ascii file into Civil 3D, via the survey database, to process linework.
